Across the Water
Dr. Brian St. John, Conductor
Three water-theme pieces, all rich in orchestral colors, are joined by a masterwork from across the Atlantic. The beauty of two vital European rivers are depicted by Smetana's Die Moldau, and Strauss' On the Beautiful Blue Danube. Mendelssohn captures the stark beauty and rocky waters of The Hebrides in his famous tone poem of the sam name. The concert concludes with a rarely-heard masterwork, the Symphony No. 8, by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.
